Summary

Description: After exploring Quito with its colonial old town, we dedicate the next 5 days to the Amazon Basin and its natural and cultural diversity. In the communities of Shayari and Limoncocha we will learn about the lifestyle and traditions of the local indigenous people and have the opportunity to see the fascinating wildlife and vegetation of the rainforest. In the second part of our journey we will travel around the Northern Highlands of Ecuador, where we will gain detailed insights into the culture of the Kichua-Otavalo and Afro-Ecuadorian people, and additionally enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful landscapes during several hikes and day trips in the region.

Itinerary

Day 1, Quito: Transfer airport-hotel, city tour to the historic center of Quito with its famous squares and churches, Cultural Centre Tianguéz. Accommodation in Quito.

Day 2, Shayari: Departure to Lago Agrio, visit to San Rafael Waterfall along the way, afternoon arrival in Shayari, welcome and explanations about the community. Accommodation in community lodge Shayari.

Day 3, Shayari: Guayusa ceremony at sunrise (optional), visit to animal rescue center, afternoon hike along the "waterfall trail", swimming in waterfall. Accommodation in Shayari.

Day 4, Shayari: Hike along the "lake trail", boat tour on the lake and fishing, return to village in private transport, demonstration of handicrafts production, cultural night. Accommodation in Shayari.

Day 5, Limoncocha: Departure in private transport to Limoncocha, welcome and walk through the village, boat tour on Lake Limoncocha, caiman spotting. Accommodation in community lodge Limoncocha.

Day 6, Limoncocha: Visit to San Pablo village, botanical garden and medicinal plants, Secoya museum and handicrafts workshop, fish breeding site, return to Limoncocha. Accommodation in Limoncocha.

Day 7, Papallacta: departure from Limoncocha and trip to Papallacta with stopovers at sites of interests along the way, free afternoon for Papallacta hot springs. Accommodation in Papallacta.

Day 8, Cotacachi: Walk to environmental interpretation center, visit to Equator monument Quitsato near Cayambe, afternoon arrival in indigenous communities of Cotacachi. Family homestay in community.

Day 9, Cotacachi: Tour of four indigenous communities, visit to Peguche Waterfall and handicrafts workshops, handicrafts market Plaza de Ponchos in Otavalo. Family homestay.

Day 10, Cotacachi: Liberty Train from Ibarra to Salinas, afro-ecuadorian culture, Salt Museum and ethnographic exhibition, organic fruit and coffee farm, return to indigenous village. Family homestay.

Day 11, Cotacachi: Visit to communal micro-enterprises in Cotacachi, ethno-botanical garden, free afternoon to relax or for activities with your host family. Family homestay.

Day 12, Cotacachi: Hike around Lake Cuicocha, city tour of Cotacachi and local leather workshops, return to host family, cultural night. Family homestay.

Day 13, departure: Departure from indigenous village and trip to Quito, visit to Equator monument Mitad del Mundo and site museums, Museum Intiñan, transfer to airport or hotel. End of Tour.

Included Services

Tour leader and local guides, private transport during the whole trip, full board (12 breakfasts, 13 lunches, 12 dinners), 12 nights accommodation with private bathroom (1n Quito, 3n Shayari, 2n Limoncocha 1n Papallacta, 5n indigenous village near Cotacachi), all entry fees and activities as detailed in the itinerary.

What to bring?

Mandatory: travel documents, sun protection, clothes (for tropical humid Amazon and cool Andean Highlands) and personal things for at least 7 days (along the way we will have the chance to do laundry and shop necessary things)

Recommended: camera, binoculars, swimwear, rain poncho

Optional: a good book for long travelling drives
